为迎接 2008 年在北京举办的第 29 届夏季奥林匹克运动会，北京市规划委员会受北京市人民政府委托，特举办中国北京 2008“ 城市标志 ” 概念性设计旨在征集景观标志物的设计创意，丰富奥林匹克公园城市景观。

2. 竞赛宗旨
（ 1 ） 体现新北京城市建设的成就和奥林匹克文化精神的内涵，成为城市建设的新亮点和奥林匹克运动留给城市的宝贵遗产；
（ 2 ） 延续和加强北京城市轴线，完善奥林匹克公园的景观，丰富奥林匹克公园文化、休闲等公共活动功能；
（ 3 ） 体现 “ 绿色奥运、科技奥运、人文奥运 ” 的宗旨，充分利用环保、建筑科技进步的新成果，成为可持续发展的典范。

at the core of this design is the concept of time followed by influence from the form and symbolism of the chinese dragon. time represents unity of humanity, as one thing shared by all living things. it brings us together and ultimately tears us all apart. it is something that cannot be touched or changed by anyone. this focus on unity is similar to what the olympics stand for: people from all over coming together to celebrate common bonds.
the design started by trying to visualize a timeline. a piece of rope seemed to be the best representation of the abstract ideas we wished to convey. as a result, the pastisrepresented with thick bundle threads, buried within the ground representing the foundation on which the future is built upon. we follow the many threads toward the present, which is always in a constant flux and therefore a beacon of white light forevershining. finally we see the future, where the threads explode and unravel in manydirections, representing the many paths we could tread and the many outcomes we face awaiting their assimilation to the past. future builds upon the past, thus the taper.
landmarks can define cities. researching how this works was essential. like other landmarks around the world this proposal is essentially a sculpture, although similarly functioning as much more. to bring together relating history, culture, environment, the city, the country, and the people, a delicate system must be created to house and accommodate all of these important elements to create a meaningful landmark. a harmony and balance must be created for a successful coexistence.
this design proposes an artistic museum providing interactive and diverse exhibits of all forms. a landmark housed in a vehicle for knowledge.
here one could visit this vibrant axis for an afternoon, explore the inside of this information conduit and walk away with a myriad of diverse knowledge concerning the history of beijing or just china in general as the main focuses. though especially accommodating for tourists and visitors, the aim is to interest and appeal to everyone local or otherwise. the interior space will be supplemented with rich park elements and vegetation lining the axis to provide uplifting surroundings for visitors to enjoy year round.
though basically one continuous space, the inside will provide an organic palette of changing curved surfaces to be enhanced with temporary and permanent galleries, installations and exhibitions. the décor will be designed to constantly stimulate all part of one's mind by the end of their linear travel through the “belly” of this sculpture. it is this content that will define the spaces.
following the ideal path of this time capsule one will enter through the half open stone carved abstract mouth (beginning of time/past) and exit near the end of the axis through the hi-tech band of clear glass representing the present while lastly looking up towards the fraying and flaying tendrils of the representing the optimistic future upon exiting.
the wrapped skin is a diamond shaped grid with photovoltaic cells arrayed on the top to provide electricity for the elaborate lights as well as the other systems inside. the structural members of this outer rigid frame will be made of tin plated steel to provide the strength required and in time produce an aged green tint as the material tarnishes. the diamond shaped spaces in between will be glazed different tints of glass ranging from more opaque at the head and becoming translucent up to the band of clear glass starting the tail. this will provide dramatic dark glows of diffuse lighting to match the artistic and historical character of the space.
an elaborate lighting scheme has been designed to enhance the appearance and significance of the landmark. the palette based on the five colors of the feng shui energies. the versatile led (light emitting diode) lighting has the sophistication and flexibility to match the mood required for any type of exhibition taking place inside the museum. the exterior will have a much more static lighting scheme relating to the concept of time with the exception of the energetic display from the future's nine stretching tips and brilliant glow of the present.
